Stockholm Syndrome!

How many of us really know the definition of this phrase? Stockholm may sound like the name of a place. Google, anyone? Yes! It’s actually the capital of Sweden which is the main centre of cultural, media, political, and economic attributes of the country.

How about syndrome? Yea, we don’t need Google to tell us this. We all know that syndrome may be related to a group of symptoms that collectively indicate or characterize a disease, psychological disorder, or other abnormal condition.

But in this case, it’s not really a terminally related disorder. It’s somewhat of a psychological attachment that people develop over a hostile force. Let’s take a situational scene for example.

A plane that has been hijacked and compromised by a group of extremists, would cause immense wary to the authorities and passengers of the flight.  The pilot, cabin crew and passengers are all threatened and feared by the extremists. In the ordeal, the hostile force may have been brutal and fearsome in their handling. However, the passengers develop a sense of belonging among themselves, cooperating and figuring every single way to get loose from the grips of terror! In rare (but proved to have happened) cases, the hostages form an inexplicable fond feeling towards the hijackers. This so called ‘disease’ is named as Stockholm Syndrome!

The use of the name Stockholm is due to the infamous heist which happened years ago, called the Norrmalmstorg robbery of Kreditbanken which took place at Norrmalmsotrg in Stockholm, Sweden. During the crime, several bank employees were held hostage in a bank vault from August 23 to 28, 1973, while their captors negotiated with police. During this standoff, the victims became emotionally attached to their captors, rejected assistance from government officials at one point, and even defended their captors after they were freed from their six-day ordeal.

It’s really an interesting phenomenon in terms of psychological study that can be deeply investigated. Over the years, many researches relatable to this syndrome have been conducted. Having done these investigations, psychology researchers feel that this syndrome could probably answer thousands of questions that we all have within ourselves related to our marriage, sex and relationship life.
